| SIerras to the Sea |
| This
itinerate, self-drive holiday is the self
guided version of our unique Silk Trail guided walking holiday. The pretty white villages
and dramatic sierras of the Axarquia offer
wonderful walking opportunities during most
months of the year. Accommodation for the week is
in three carefully chosen rural hotels that
perfectly complement the holiday. All the hotels
have en-suite rooms and pools that may be used in
the warmer months. |

|

|
The walks cover the length of the
south facing slopes of the Sierra Tejeda
and Sierra Almijara, connecting villages
on the way. The holiday starts to the west at an
altitude of 2,000ft and ends in the east where
the mountains dramatically drop to the Mediterranean.
The five daily walks are rated as Level 2 and there is a longer option on
some days, extending the walks by 1 to 2 hours to
Level 3. It is, of course, possible to opt out of
any of the walks and just enjoy relaxing in the
changing, exceptional locations. |

Itinerary

Day
1 - Arrival day
The transfer from
Malaga airport to Canillas de Albaida takes
an hour by road. You stay for the first two
nights in Antonio's new Mirador hotel on the edge
of this tranquil village, two miles to the west
of Cómpeta. The hotel has comfortable en-suite
rooms, a small pool and great views across
the pueblo to La Maroma. In the
evening, welcome drinks on Antonio's terrace
followed by dinner at Gustavo's excellent
restaurant in the Plaza.

Day 2 - White Villages
The first walk
starts in Salares one of the oldest
and prettiest of the Axarquia pueblos blancos.
The route leaves the village over a Roman bridge
and takes a gentle river path up and around the
base of La Maroma, at over 2000 metres the highst
peak in our sierras. There are with great views
of the mountains and sea and the white villages
constantly appear and disappear from sight The
old path dropping into Sedella provides spectacular views
of the village. |
|
Day
3 - Cerro Gavilan
This walk
provides the first spectacular views of the Sierras Almijara. There are two walk
options. Both involve a steady climb to the east
from Canillas into the hills and the saddle of
Cerro Gavilan. The longer walk continues with a
stiff climb up and around Cerro Atalaya, a picnic
stop and circular return to Canillas. The shorter
walk returns from Gavilan by an easy descending
track to Cómpeta, leaving ample time for a tapas lunch in the Plaza.
The gentle walk back to Canillas then takes about
30 minutes.

|

|
Day 4 - La Mina and the Silk
path
After a
farewell breakfast in Canillas you make the short
road transfer to La MIna Hotel where
you will stay for one night. The hotel is
impressive, remote and the location quite
stunning. The walk starts from the hotel and
picks up the centuries old path linking Cómpeta
to Granada with great mountain and sea views. You
are likely to picnic at the Venta Pradillas
before the spectacular but gentle desent to the
hotel. In the warmer month you may fancy a swim
before drinks and dinner in the hotel.
|
|
Day 5 - Transfer to
Frigiliana
On a fine
morning, breakfast on La Mina terrace with the
sun rising over the sierras is something
quite special. The road transfer to Frigiliana
can be made at leisure and you may chose to spend
some time at the coast on route. For the final
three nights you will stay in the Posada
de Morisca. The gardens and pool of the
Posada are another pefect place to
relax. The bedrooms are a joy. All are furnished
in Moorish style with individual terraces and
Mediterranean views. In the evening you will have
dinner at the hotel. |
 |
|

|
Day 6 - El Fuerte and
Acebuchal
El Fuerte,
the mountain towering above Frigiliana was
the scene of the immense and final battle expelling
the Moors from al-Andalus. ys
The walk today follows another ancient path
connecting Frigiliana to Granada to the west of
the mountain. There are long and short options
for the walk, both passing through El
Acebuchal. This once abandoned village
has been brought back to life in a spectacular
fashion by Antonio El Zumbo and family. They may
tempt you with an excellent tapas lunch before
the final part of the walk. |
|
Day 7 - Frigiliana to Maro.
This classic
walk leaves Frigiliana through
the Higueron valley and into the sierras.
Again there are two walk options, The longer walk
continues to the Rio Chillar, surely one
of the most beautiful and seemingly remote
valleys in Andalucia. After a steep climb out of
the valley there is a long and gentle descent to
the famous caves and coastal village of
Maro. The shorter walk takes an easier
route back to Frigiliana leaving time to visit
Maro by road. A visit to the caves is highly
recommended and is included in the cost of the
holiday. |
