| Sierras to the Sea |
| This
two center self guided holiday with hotel
accommodation is based on our Silk Trail guided walking holiday. It
provides the best of two worlds. It will particularly suit those
seeking peace and tranquility plus some excellent and varied walks. The holiday begins with a four night stay in
Antonio's Mirador hotel in Canillas de
Albaida. The spacious en-suite rooms all have balconies and
fine views across the village to the mountains and down to the sea. The
village, although small, has some excellent restaurants and is a great
location for walks into the Sierras Almijara & Tejeda. |

|
The last three
nights are spent in the pretty coastal village of Maro
where the Sierra Almijara meets the Mediterranean. Close to
the large resort of Nerja, this tiny village could not be more
different. Famous for it's spectacular caves and Roman aquaduct, it is
a delightful place to stay. The walks are rated as Level 2. For those who choose, there is a shorter
option on some days. Both hotels have small pools and sun terraces
making the holiday a good choice for the warmer months. |

Day
1 - Arrival Day
It is best to arrive at Malaga airport with plenty of daylight to
spare. The drive up to Canillas de Albaida takes
about an hour. Antonio's hotel is on the right as you drive in to the
village. The hotel has comfortable en-suite rooms with
balconies and great views across the pueblo to the sierras.
There is a small pool, terrace and views down to the
Mediterranean. In the evening you are invited to Gustavo's restaurant
in the Plaza for welcome dinner with exceptional local
cuisine.

Day 2 - Los Llanos
The first walk in the
program is a circular route from the hotel and crosses the river
valleys of the Cajula and Llenada and into the Sierra
Tejeda. We are never far from the village but the area feels
remote with some fine views of the mountains. You may choose
to return to Canillas in time for a late tapas lunch, or
perhaps the longer walk and finish with a 'sundowner' on Antonios
terrace.
Walking time 4 or 6 Hours |

Day
3 - White Villages
The walk starts in
Salares one of the oldest and prettiest of our pueblos
blancos. The route leaves the village over a Roman bridge and
takes a gentle river path up and around the base of La Maroma, at over
2000 metres the highest peak in our sierras. The white villages
constantly appear and disappear before we drop down to Sedella for
drinks and a traditional traveller's lunch
Walking time 3 or 5 Hours

Day
4 - Cerro Gavilan
This walk provides the
first spectacular views of the Sierras Almijara. There are two walk
options. Both involve a steady climb to the east from Canillas into the
hills and the saddle of Cerro Gavilan. The longer walk continues with a
stiff climb up and around Cerro Atalaya, a picnic stop and circular
return to Canillas. The shorter walk returns from Gavilan by an easy
descending track to Cómpeta, leaving ample time for a tapas lunch in
the Plaza. The pretty, level walk back to Canillas then takes
about 30 minutes.
Walking time 4 or 6 Hours
|
|
Day 5 - To the sea
The transfer to Maro
takes about 45 minutes by road. Some may chose a morning transfer and a
relax around the pool at the new hotel or a visit a beach or the famous
caves in Maro. Others may wish to explore before moving on. Those who
have opted for self-drive have the flexibility to travel farther afield
and perhaps take one of the recommended excursions described in the
holiday notes. |

Day
6 - Maro
to Frigiliana
This classic walk leaves
Maro and climbs gently into the sierras
and then more steeply to the rim of the Rio Chillar, surely
one of the most beautiful and seemingly remote valleys in Andalucia.
After the desent and steep climb out of the valley the path undulates
with great sea and mountain views. At the end of the walk, the path
descents steeply to the valley of the Rio Higueron
and then the final climb up to the 'picture book' village of Frigiliana.
Walking time 5 Hours |
|
Day
7 -Mediterranean coastal walk
For the final walk, we
offer various options to suit individual prefences for the last day.
All have great views as the Sierras drop into the sea in
this area of exceptional natural beauty. Some may choose a shorter walk
with lunch on a beach. Others may choose one of the more strenuous
options
Walking time - up to 5 Hours . |
